Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is counseling/therapy, and how does it work?

Counseling (or psychotherapy) is a collaborative process with a trained mental health professional to explore thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and challenges. It helps improve emotional well-being, develop coping skills, and achieve personal goals. Sessions are typically conversational, goal-oriented, and tailored to your needs.

2. How do I know if I need therapy?

Common signs include persistent sadness, anxiety, relationship issues, difficulty coping with stress/life changes, trouble sleeping/eating, low self-esteem, or feeling stuck. Many people seek therapy for personal growth, even without a major crisis. If you’re wondering whether you need it, that’s often a good indicator to explore it.

3. What should I expect in the first session?

The initial session (often an intake/assessment) focuses on building rapport. The therapist asks about your background, current concerns, goals, and history. You can ask questions too. It’s normal to feel nervous—there’s no pressure to share everything at once. Subsequent sessions dive deeper into your issues.

4. How long are sessions, and how often do I need to attend?

Most individual sessions last 45–60 minutes. Frequency varies (weekly is common at the start; it may taper later). The total duration depends on your goals—some need a few sessions, others longer-term support.

5. How do I choose the right therapist?

Look for someone you feel comfortable with, who is licensed and experienced in your concerns. Key factors: good “fit” (you can be open/honest), their approach, responsiveness, and specialties (e.g., anxiety, trauma, couples). Many offer initial consultations to assess compatibility.

6. Is everything I say confidential?

Yes, with important exceptions (e.g., risk of harm to self/others, child/elder abuse, or court orders). Therapists explain confidentiality and its limits upfront. This builds trust and safety.

7. Does insurance cover counseling? What about cost?

Many plans cover therapy, but it varies (copays, deductibles, session limits). Check for in-network providers or ask about sliding-scale fees/self-pay options. Online platforms may have different structures.

8. What’s the difference between counseling, therapy, and psychiatry?

  • Counseling/Therapy: Focuses on talk-based support, coping skills, and emotional processing.  These appointments can range from 45 minutes to 90 minutes depending upon the type of service and need of the client.
  • Psychiatry: Medical doctors who can prescribe medication.  These appointments are usually 15 minutes to 30 minutes.
  • Psychologist: Testing and Evaluations ~ These generally take anywhere from several hours to days.

9. Can therapy help with [specific issue] (e.g., anxiety, relationships, grief)?Yes—therapy is effective for a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship problems, stress, life transitions, and more. Approaches like CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) are evidence-based for many concerns.

10. How long until I see results?

It varies by person, issue, and consistency. Some notice improvements in a few sessions; deeper change often takes weeks to months. Progress depends on your engagement and the therapeutic relationship.
