Back to School Essential Oil Considerations

Home » Essential Oils » Back to School Essential Oil Considerations

What do you say?  How about, “Let’s change our world this year.”

Let’s make a choice to start out well and conquer our challenges.  Let’s empower those we love to have the best year possible.

Here are some tips on how to get your kids to use essential oils throughout the day:

Morning: Help the kids wake up with either Peppermint, Wild Orange, Citrus Bliss, or On Guard.

Afternoon: For a homework helper, diffuse Peppermint, Wild Orange, or Rosemary  to help boost mental focus and concentration.

Bedtime: For a good night’s sleep use Serenity or Lavender by either diffusing in air, rubbing on bottom of feet, or by placing a couple drops on their pillowcase.

Right now it’s back to school prep time.  There are so many challenges we can expect our kids to face. The best approach is to talk openly with kids about the situations they are facing.  A compliment to some of the proactive conversations and plans you assist your kids with is essential oils.  Essential oils are not going to do the emotional healing work that each individual needs.  They can however aid and assist with the releasing of emotional burdens and physical components of tension and stress related to the feelings we develop that we may not want to hold on to.  The names given to the oils are closely related to how they impact an individuals physiology.  This article doesn’t mention all of the oils that you may find useful. I recommend reading the book mentioned below.

Here are some essential oil tips from The Emotional Reference Guide, Emotions and Essential Oils by Daniel McDonald:

1. Lemon Oil ~ The Oil of Focus
“Lemon Oil helps a person to be mentally focused on one thing at a time.  It can aid in restoring energy, mental flexibility and the drive to complete a project.  Whether an individual has a difficult time concentrating or feels incapable of learning, Lemon Oil clears self-judgements about learning such as “I’m dumb” or “I’m not a good student”.  Lemon calms fears and insecurities while restoring confidence… ”

2. Basil Oil ~ The Oil of Renewal
“Basil essential oil can also aid in the symptoms that come with adrenal exhaustion: overwhelm, fatigue, low energy and the inability to cope with stress. Bails can help support those who are under a great deal of mental strain; it rejuvenates and may strengthen the adrenals and restore the body to its natural sleep rhythms, activity and rest.  Basil oil is also helpful for addiction recovery.   ‘It gives hope and optimism to the tired soul. Bails may assist an individual in giving up false stimulants or other substance related addictions. By increasing one’s natural energy, it supports individuals to achieve greater balance and health’.”

3.  Bergamot ~ The Oil of Self-Acceptance
“Now more than ever, it seems that people are struggling with feelings of despair, self-judgement and low self-esteem. Many people also struggle with giving themselves the amount of self-love and self-acceptance. Bergamot invites individuals to see life with more optimism and and love themselves. According to the Emotions & Essential Oils Guide, Bergamot has a cleansing affect on stagnant feelings and limiting belief systems. Many people tend to hide behind a mask or fascade of cheerfulness when deep down they are feeling that they are “not good enough”. Individuals who are afraid to show their true thoughts and feelings can benefit from using Bergamot. The powerful cleansing properties of this oil generate movement in the energy system of the body. This energetic movement can bring hope to the individual that is uses the oil. Bergamot is known as an antidepressant. It helps people share their inner-self and increase their self-confidence. It can assist individuals in leaning to love themselves unconditionally.”

4. Cardamom ~ The Oil of Objectivity
“Cardamom is the oil of objectivity, helping individuals to regain objectivity, mental sobriety, and self-control. It is especially beneficial for individuals with a long history of anger or aggression. It helps individuals let go of emotional distortions which cause them to objectify other people and see them as inconveniences. Emotionally and spiritually, cardamom essential oil is often used for issues centering around anger or frustration. This could include blame, frustration, judging others, rage, outbursts, etc. It’s said to help you step back from a situation to see it more clearly from a less attached perspective. It might also help you to make changes that require you to be honest with yourself and take responsibility for things you have either created or have the power to change.”

5. Cassia ~ The Oil of Self-Assurance
“Cassia helps eliminate feelings of nervousness and can help replace the shy and timid with confidence and the willingness to try.  Emotionally Cassia essential oil is said to encourage a person’s sense of self, inner strength, and courage. In this way it may be helpful to support a person’s confidence, ability to “put themselves out there”, or try new things as they feel self-assured in their ability and worth.”

6. Cedarwood ~ The Oil of Community
“Cedarwood Essential Oil brings people together to experience the strength and value of community.  Those in need of Cedarwood struggle to form bonds within social groups.  It inspires the feeling of belonging and assists the heart in opening up to receive love and support from other people. Cedarwood supports individuals in seeing that they are not alone. It assists in opening the awareness of individuals to the support system that is already available to them, such as, friends or family that have been overlooked.  It invites individuals to both give and receive, so they may experience the strength of groups and the joy of relationships.”

7. Cilantro ~ The Oil of Releasing Control
Cilantro encourages the release of worry and control and helps the user gain harmony and peace within.  It facilitates emotional cleansing, and especially encourages the individual to let go of worry and control which enables them to feel free them from heavy burdens.  The therapeutic and culinary uses of Cilantro have been documented for centuries. Cilantro contains antioxidants known to protect the body’s cells from oxidative stress. As a counselor many kids will come to me to discuss the topic of bullies. Remember that the oils are not a substitute for the emotional work you may need to do with your child or that a counselor may need to assist with but they can help as a compliment to what you are already doing.  To use the oils for help with Bullies see some of the feelings listed below and the oils that may be helpful:

Sometimes when this happens kids can have feelings of worthlessness.  Some oils that help with these kinds of feelings are Cassia, Bergamot, and Metabolic Blend

Sometimes kids may feel unlovable.  Some recommended oils for this are: Bergamot, Respiratory Blend, and Jasmine.

Another group of feelings kids may experience in these kinds of situations with bullies are feelings of being a victim, or feelings of being attacked or violated.
For feelings of being a victim: Clove, Ginger, Jasmine, Skin Clearing Blend
For feelings of being violated: Protective Blend, Ginger, Clove, and Jasmine
